Major Cruise Lines Set to Boost Cruise Tourism in ASEAN, Philippines

The Philippines is one of the major cruise destinations in Asia. Several factors make the country an attractive cruise destination, and the Philippine government has laid out plans for implementing major improvements in the country’s cruise tourism gateways. International cruise liners continue to contribute substantially to the growth of Philippine cruise tourism industry.

Factors that Add “More Fun” to Philippine Cruise Trips

The Philippines have recently spurred interest from big cruise companies around the world, in part through the experiences of previous cruise travelers. Past foreign visitors were delighted by the country’s overall professional tour service, managed shore activities, food, facilities, museums, historical sites, shopping places, nightlife, leisure hubs, as well as the convenience in traveling by taxi. Other reasons that international tourists enjoy cruising in the Philippines are the natural attractions the country has, such as warm weather and a very relaxing atmosphere for recreation at the beach.

Aggressive Approach to an Increasing Demand

Big players in the cruise industry have begun focusing their attention toward the ASEAN region, particularly in the Philippines. In response to the rising demand of cruise holidays in Southeast Asia, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), Department of Tourism, and other government agencies have set schemes in building and repairing eight of the Philippines’ major seaports – Davao, Bohol, Boracay, Cebu, Metro-Manila, Puerto Princesa, Subic, and Zamboanga. Various port development programs were also planned to improve cruise terminals in the ports of Puerto Princesa, Currimao in Ilocos Norte, and Catagbacan in Bohol province.

International cruise companies have expressed long-term commitment to the Asian market. The Philippines is optimistic that with more cruise ships showing interest to dock into the country’s ports, the industry is expected to grow over the years from the current five percent share of the market to at least 20 percent contribution to total foreign arrivals in the country.
